The Yankees Baseball Whisperer

A night for the record books

And history was made; No Alex Rodriguez did not hit homerun 500 tonight, but the Yankees accomplished another feat tonight. The Yanks tied a franchise record tonight by hitting 8 homeruns during Tuesday’s game at The Stadium. This feat was previously set on June 28, 1939 against the Philadelphia Athletics.  Bobby Abreu, Robinson Cano, Jorge Posada, Johnny Damon, Melky Cabrera, and Shelly Duncan all hit a homerun tonight. Hideki Matsui hit 2 homeruns tonight for the Yankees. Alex Rodriguez was held hitless going 0 for 5 tonight.

As to be expected (in a one sided game), the game was laced with ejections. White Sox Manager, Ozzie Guillen was ejected by home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi in the first inning and White Sox first baseman, Paul Konerko, was ejected by home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi in the 6th inning. Tonight’s game was a real thriller. Yankees won tonight’s opener 16-3

FINAL WHISPER: Let’s hope tomorrow is just as exciting (wait… all Yankees games are exciting)!

499 and Counting

While the rest of the world waits on Barry Bonds to hit career homerun 755 and 756, I’m patiently waiting for Alex Rodriguez to hit career homerun 500. Show of hands, how many of you are sick of hearing about Bonds? (I raised my hand). And no, I’m not sick of it because I think Bonds is a cheater or anything like that, I applaud him for what he’s done; I’m just sick of hearing about him. ESPN has gone “Bonds Bananas” Showing almost every Giants game. Even if ESPN does not play the game, they break in whenever Bonds goes to bat. I understand this is a big thing for baseball, but it doesn’t really concern me. If he breaks the record, congrats to him, but I don’t want to see Giants games on ESPN everyday until he does. Just let me see the replay on Baseball Tonight or Sports Center and I’ll be happy. I understand local stations showing the games in San Francisco, but taking over ESPN is a little much… Anyway back to A-Rod.

A-rod is going for career homerun 500. Many people suspect that his is starting to crack under pressure, but I feel this is NOT the case. Does A-rod feel the pressure to hit 500? I assume yes, but a different kind of pressure. I think he wants to hit 500, so he can get the media off his back and go back to “normal.” MLB is using a special commemorative ball for each A-rod at bat until he hits 500. When A-Rod comes up to bat the umpire has to stop the game and get these balls and then resume the game; now you know that’s got to mess with not only A-Rod’s head, but also the pitcher. Is Alex in a slump? No, well maybe… but it’s not because he’s not trying or he’s cracking under pressure… It’s because he’s ready to hit 500 and get this media circus over with, so he’s expanding the zone and going after pitches he probably shouldn’t. This is perfectly normal. Bonds is doing the same exact thing. My advice to Alex would be to relax and let the homerun come to him instead of going after it (We all know 500 will come, it’s just a matter of when).

So, when will Alex hit 500? My guess is tomorrow versus Jose Contreras and the White Sox. Contreras is in a bit of a “pitching slump.” Contreras was lit up by the Tigers for nine earned runs on 12 hits over 4 2/3 innings Wednesday. The hits allowed were a season-worst total for the right-hander. Over his last 11 starts, Contreras has a 1-9 record with an 8.27 ERA. Contreras has a 0-2 record with a 3.21 ERA against the Yankees this season. I think with the day off today (Monday), I think Alex will have had time to clear his head and relax. Alex will be playing at home in front of the best fans in all of baseball and I think this along with the rest will pump him up and he’ll hit 500. The Yankees will be in New York until Sunday August 5th, so look for A-rod to hit 500 in this time span. I personally think tomorrow will be the best day for him to hit 500. Now we just have to wait and see!

Kei Igawa was wild in the first 2 innings, but regained a little bit of control later in the game. Overall not a horrible start from Igawa, but certainly not a good start. Our relievers just could not stop the Royals from scoring.
